Five of my favorite female musicians!
1. Tori Amos
Possibly the most influential singer I have ever come across, I have been listening to Tori Amos for as long as I can remember. From her breakout album Little Earthquakes in 1992 to her newest release American Doll Posse (2007), Amos has continued to evolve as an artist. Her lyrics read like poetry and usually focus on strong themes such as sexuality, religion, and personal tragedy. She can't read music but has been playing the piano since she was three years old.

Sinead O'Connor is mostly known as being a crazy Irish chick. One of the most controversial musicians of our time she made headlines when she tore up a picture of the pope after performing on Saturday Night Live. What a lot of people overlook is that she is an absolutely amazing musician. A lot of her music focuses on the politics between Ireland and England, and the injustices the Irish have suffered.
3. Joanna Newsom

4. Kimya Dawson

Kimya Dawson first reached mainstream after being predominately featured on the soundtrack for the film Juno. I began listening to her well before then after I heard her song "I like Giants" on the radio. I was in love with it as soon as I heard it and started collecting her albums. Before her solo career she was part of the band the Moldy Peaches. Each of her albums has a different sound but she is most commonly known for her fast singing and blunt lyrics.
5. Wanda Jackson

Wanda Jackson is also known as the "Queen of rockabilly". She rose to fame in the mid 1950's while she was still in high school. She has an absolutely amazing voice and is just damn fun to listen to. She is one of the few country singers I like.
